My father started a mobile disco back in 1979 when DJ-ing was still a new and fresh idea. I was still a small child back then but found interest in the music and DJ equipment. It wasn't until 1989 I had my own set of SL1210s! It was during my last few years at school, I got my first experience with scratch DJ-ing and learned a little about the DMC community.
I started out by doing parties for friends slowly building up a DJ set and went pro as a mobile DJ in 1992. I have worked in many different venues covering everything from 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and various styles of dance. I have worked with audiences from just a hand full right up to over 1,500 people. I've played in venues from local pubs/clubs to large clubs like the Cross (Kings Cross) and world famous places such as the Royal Ascot.
Being visually impaired, ment I wasn't able to drive and working the mobile cerkit ment hiring vans and drivers. This increasing costs and giving me problems when either were not available. Despite this I continued running Images Mobile Disco until 2000.
When running Images Mobile Discos, my set included the below equipment:
Everything was fully pro alli flight cased and I had pro light stands, speaker stands and deck stand including a star cloth. You can see some pictures of this set in the Gallery section of this site.
Here is a quick list of some of the venues I previously worked at. This is not a complete list as I have worked in 100s of different places to 10,000s of different people.
I now work for Newham NHS developing websites and have been since 2000. I was first introduced to time code vinyl namely Traktor (Final Scratch) late 2006 and was instantly hooked, getting my own copy of FS2 in November 2006. This giving me a new challenge as the GUI for Traktor is completely graphical, therefore, causing access issues for me with my limited sight. I quickly over come many of these by making use of various MIDI Control mixers and in May of this year upgraded to the new Traktor Scratch, replacing the Stanton Scratch amp and old time code vinyl.
I did a one day advance course at London School of Sound and was pleased to meet a pro club DJ who's been in the DJ game 20 years. It was interesting to learn I already have many of the skills required for night club DJ-ing as my experience as a mobile DJ has paid dividends.
I am now looking for opportunities to work in night clubs using this new found technology called Digital DJ-ing. This I hope to open doors for me in the club seen by enabling me to DJ with minimal equipment and have my music stored on a portable hard drive.
My current setup includes the below equipment. Not all of this would be required to take to a club, as most clubs have turntables, cd decks, mixers etc.
